Zygomycetes

A broad group of fast-growing molds commonly associated with acute water losses and wet organic debris.

Appearance

Zygomycetes-type growth is often fluffy and rapidly spreading, with white to gray colonies that darken as sporangia mature. This grouping includes molds such as Mucor, Rhizopus, and related fast-colonizing species.

Where It's Found

These fungi are common in soil, dust, and decaying organic matter. Indoors, they are frequently linked to flood-damaged materials, wet insulation, damp carpets, and debris left in place after water intrusion.

Health Effects

For most occupants, exposure is managed as an irritant and allergenic concern. In immunocompromised individuals, some species in this group are associated with serious opportunistic infections, making prompt cleanup important.

Relation to Water Damage

Zygomycetes can expand very quickly after major wetting events if drying is delayed. Immediate extraction, aggressive drying, and removal of contaminated porous materials are key prevention measures.
