Wallemia

A dry-tolerant mold frequently associated with house dust and low-moisture microenvironments.

Appearance

Wallemia colonies are often compact and can range from tan to brown as they mature. Unlike many molds, it tolerates low water activity, making it capable of persisting in comparatively dry indoor niches.

Where It's Found

It is commonly reported in settled house dust, stored dry foods, and other low-moisture reservoirs. Indoor presence often reflects dust loading, humidity fluctuations, and inadequate cleaning of hidden accumulation zones.

Health Effects

Wallemia is linked to allergenic and respiratory irritation potential, particularly in occupants with asthma or mold sensitivity. Chronic dust exposure can increase symptom burden even when obvious visible growth is absent.

Relation to Water Damage

While it can persist in drier conditions, humidity spikes and intermittent wetting can increase growth and spore release. Managing indoor RH and reducing dust reservoirs are central to control.
