Nigrospora

A dark-spored environmental mold typically associated with plant material and damp cellulose surfaces.

Appearance

Nigrospora often forms dark gray to black colonies with rapid sporulation. Under magnification, it is known for round, dark single-celled spores that can become airborne from disturbed growth or contaminated dust.

Where It's Found

It is common on dead leaves and plant debris outdoors. Indoors, it can appear on damp paper products, textiles, and wood-based materials when moisture and settled organic dust are present.

Health Effects

Nigrospora is generally treated as an allergenic and irritant spore source. Sensitive occupants may report respiratory discomfort, sinus irritation, or eye symptoms during elevated exposure.

Relation to Water Damage

Growth can follow leaks, condensation issues, or high indoor humidity where cellulose remains damp. Drying affected materials and reducing dust reservoirs are key to lowering recurrent counts.
