Knufia

A black yeast-like fungus linked to repeatedly damp mineral and painted surfaces.

Appearance

Knufia forms very dark, compact colonies with thick-walled cells adapted to stressful environments. It often appears as small black spotting or staining on moisture-exposed surfaces rather than fluffy growth.

Where It's Found

It is commonly reported on masonry, painted exteriors, and surface coatings that experience repeated wet-dry cycles. Indoors, it may appear around window frames, grout lines, and sealants where condensation or splash moisture persists.

Health Effects

Knufia is generally regarded as a low-to-moderate allergenic concern for most occupants. Even when health impact is limited, visible black staining can indicate chronic humidity and poor drying conditions.

Relation to Water Damage

This fungus is strongly tied to repeated moisture exposure rather than one-time flooding. Addressing surface wetting patterns, condensation control, and ventilation is important to prevent recurrent growth.
