Inonotus

A wood-decay fungus that can signal prolonged wetting and structural rot in building materials.

Appearance

Inonotus species are basidiomycetes that form rust-brown to dark fruiting structures on decaying wood. Their spores are typically produced from those fruiting bodies, which often appear only after long-term moisture exposure.

Where It's Found

It is most often associated with trees and outdoor wood decay, but indoor occurrences can happen in chronically wet framing, crawlspaces, and roof or wall assemblies with hidden leaks. Detection indoors often points to long-duration moisture problems.

Health Effects

Inonotus is usually treated as an irritant and allergy concern rather than a primary toxigenic indoor mold. The greater concern is often what its presence implies about advanced wood decay and compromised building components.

Relation to Water Damage

This fungus typically requires sustained wood moisture over extended periods, not a short isolated leak. When identified indoors, it should prompt a structural moisture investigation and evaluation for concealed rot.
